Without All the Pomp and Circumstance

I returned to blogging at the beginning of July, and by return I mean I more or less renewed my efforts to figure all this out. I was dead set against the whole empire that is Twitter mostly because I just didn't get it. I tend to ramble, so how was I going to communicate with the world in 140 characters or less? And what the hell is the point of a #hashtag?! I still find tweets somewhat obnoxiously hard to read, but I have finally figured out how essential it is to connect with people beyond just the friends and family bubble, and I love my bubble, but it's important to be social. I've met some pretty determined, hilarious, extremely kind, and smart people in a few months and done a helluva lot of research. Every time I figured out how to add a "pretty" social media button to my blog, or finished a post I'm particularly proud of, has been a tiny victory. I actually like Twitter now and I've learned that blogging is a lot of work and I'm completely in love with it....

Wordless Wednesday: That Face

Violet turned 3 on September 11th. A day that is full of such sadness brought this angel in to the world and in to my heart. Her birthday party was on Sunday and it was a magical day.

What's Your Style? Blog Hop Week 3

Hi all! Welcome to the "What's Your Style?" Blog Hop.  My name is Brittnei Washington.  I'm the first link up on this blog hop.  I'm a wife, mommy and homemaker who loves fashion, beauty, healthy living, design and decor.

(this is me on my wedding day! Make-up by Mac)

So I don't see too many places where bloggers who write about fashion, beauty, hair, design and decor can go and show off their style so that's how I came up with the name for the blog hop.  I wanted to create a place where creative minds could come together, share tips, experiences, gain more followers and make new blogger buddies.

If you know bloggers who do DIY projects, home decor, write about fashion, beauty, hair, design or decor,  sew anything, have a lifestyle blog, PLEASE INVITE THEM TO JOIN US! :)

This is a blog hop.  To learn what a blog hop is click here--->  What is a blog hop or linky party?

Enough of that stuff! Onto the blog hop!

Please welcome my four Co-Hosts:

Here are some guidelines for the Linky Party:

1)  Follow your host/co-hosts.  We are the first 5 linkups on the linky.  We will follow you back!  Just leave us a comment letting us know you are a new follower.

2) Grab my button if you want to!  It's at the top. Using it will bring more people in to join us.

3)  TWEET about the hop:

3)  Follow and comment on at least 3 other blogs.

4)  Pin posts that you like. Pinterest is a great traffic source for our blogs.  If you can, pin at least the linkup before and after yours.  I'll be pinning all who link up here.  I love sharing and helping people get more traffic.  You can join me if you'd like and do the same! :)

SOCIAL MEDIA HASH TAG FOR THE BLOG HOP IS #stylebloghop

If you are interested in co-hosting the "What's Your Style?" Blog Hop, please send me an email to pacobesity@gmail.com entitled: Co-Host for What's Your Style Blog Hop.  Email me a photo with the URL to your blog homepage with the name of your blog.  I'll email you back letting you know the date you will co-host. :)

Ask Away Friday: Week 5

It's that time again! Week 5 of Ask Away Friday with some of my favorite ladies, and we're growing each week. I first learned about AAF when my girl Tiffany at MrsTeeLoveLifeLaughter asked me if I would like to be featured during week 2. I had so much fun, I asked them to count me in for future Fridays and here we are!

SO- What is this all about, you ask? It's all about getting to know your fellow blogger! Each week we pick a blogger to exchange 10 questions with, then post our answers (as you will see here...) and then link them up so everyone can hop around and read all our questions and answers as our little query party grows! We'd love it if you'd join us! Grab a friend, grill 'em, post it and link up here!

This week I was saved by my new friend Lauren @ Real Housewife of NOVA where she blogs about all my favorite things: the home, DIY, decorating and so much more. She recently joined a Facebook group I started with some blogging girlfriends and was kind enough to volunteer when I admitted that I spaced out on this week's AAF link up. We already got to chatting a bit, and she is the kind of person that is really easy to like, this shines through in her writing too!

Here she is!

If I had to get to know her by that pic alone, I'd love her already. Aren't you excited to check out her answers to my questions?? She had some pretty great ones for me too. Check them out...

1) How have you changed since becoming a mom?
I always say I'm a big people pleaser. I have always had a tendency to put other people before myself, and though that hasn't changed entirely, I am now thinking about my family first and what is best for us and especially my girls. I'm not as much of a push-over. When it comes to my girls, there is nothing I wouldn't say or do if I felt like they were being wronged. I guess that's just what Moms do, but it's hard to truly understand the feeling until you're there. I'm also not nearly as sane as I used to be.

2) If you could choose one celebrity to have as your bff, who would it be?
I'm sure if I think about this one longer I might come up with a different answer, but after just finishing a season of So You Think You Can Dance, I immediately thought of Cat Deely, the show's sweetheart of a host. I have always thought she seems like the nicest, most down to earth person. I would have to find some major self-esteem mojo though because that woman is a bombshell, and I'm just...not. Anna Kendrick would be fun too. She's hilarious.

3) What is one thing your parents did or rule that they had that you will do differently with your girls?
Not to sound like Marcia Brady or anything, but I can't think of anything. My parents did an amazing job of raising us with love and trust. They let us make our own mistakes and learn from them, but were always there for us. I can only hope that John and I can give the same life to our girls. I am extremely lucky. (I wrote a little more about my family and you can check out a pic on my About Me page too, but please excuse the unfinished appearance. It's a work in progress.)

4) What is one tradition that you want to preserve for them?
Hmm...There are a lot of little holiday traditions that my parents did that I've continued with my girls...My parents used to make baby powder Easter bunny footprints, and have always celebrated Christmas Eve more elaborately than Christmas Day. My mom makes overnight French toast and we have breakfast together, even now that we have the kids we go over in the morning and eat with them. It's all the little details that make every holiday with my family so special and I want to preserve that same feeling for my kids.

5) What is your favorite holiday?
It's a toss up. I love Christmas for all the reasons mentioned above, but I am getting increasingly disenchanted with New Jersey winters. I really love Halloween too. We are BIG into the costumes and have a Halloween party every year with friends. We all get super competitive with our costumes and I've handmade many of them. I'm planning on doing a post in the next few weeks to share some of the parties of Halloween's past because there are some great costume ideas.

6) What was one project that had your husband questioning if you had lost your mind?
My husband is not at all crafty or creative. No offense babe, if you ever read this. He knows it. Anyway- he has learned a long time ago to just let me go. He was a bit skeptical when I painted 1 set of our kitchen cabinets mint green, and thought I was crazy when I chose the big, black and white damask wallpaper for our living room. He wasn't gushing about it, or telling me how right I was in the end, but he doesn't mind it. He's a very easy going guy :)

(He had no clue where I was going with that gallery wall either. I was collecting stuff for months and then just slapped it all up there one day. He has since admitted that he likes it though.)

7) If I came over for dinner, what would you make for me? If takeout is your specialty, what are we ordering?
Haha...Oh, I hate to admit it, but I don't cook, so if you came over and expected a meal out of me it would probably be grilled cheese and soup (from the can.) I can make some good breakfast though...omelets, french toast...and dessert. I like baking. Take out would probably be our best bet, and then I could treat you to the most bazaar but DELISH pizza I have ever had..ready for this one? Spicy mustard and garlic pizza. It's exactly what it sounds like, and if you like mustard it is SO good. It's basically a pizza made the usual way, but with a layer of brown mustard added before the red sauce and cheese, then some garlic.

8) What would I be surprised to know you draw the line at DYI-ing or crafting?
I hate painting. I do it and I don't mind painting furniture or if its a small step on the way to a finished product, but to just paint a room? Torture. I get really lazy and sloppy about it. It's a different story when there's detail involved. Ill paint a mural with a tiny paintbrush, but you can keep your roller, thank you.

9) What is your fav. snack food?
I love Snyder's Buffalo Wing Pretzels. They are so good.

10) Do you know any of the bloggers you read in real life?
I do! Two lovely and seriously funny ladies who I was lucky enough to meet through work. Jen blogs over at Drinking the whole Bottle and Merritt who blog with her partner in crime, Mary at Merritt and Mary. Go check them out, seriously, you'll like them.

So those are my answers to Lauren's fabulous questions! Don't forget to stop by her blog to check out how she answered the questions I asked her. Don't forget to stop by and read what some of the other participants have to say and let them know you're reading!

Palette Vlog Teaser

Hey guys! This week I will be guest posting over at My Life as a Mum with a DIY for the marquee letter you have probably seen in some of my other posts, (like this one : My Kitchen Makeover and this one: Backyard Movie Night.) It's also right up there in my header.

Of course I couldn't leave you with nothing to read or look forward to, so let me pretend for a minute that I have hundreds, no thousands of readers at the edge of their seats, hanging on my every written word while waiting for my latest DIY post to inspire their creative lives (a girl can dream right?) Here it is folks. A little teaser for my next big project and ride on the palette bandwagon, as well as a HUGE something new for me: A VLOG. <gasp> Yup. I precariously propped my Ipad up in the backyard, risking (and getting) multiple mosquito bites and ultimate humiliation to see if I could pull off a little introduction to my next DIY.

palette, DIY, teaser, intro, vlog post, facebook

SO, here it is...Please let me know that you watched, or I will be noticing the number of views going up while wondering self-consciously why no one is saying anything, and hovering over the "delete post" button...

So, if you made it through the video and heard my explanation of the intended outcome of this project (I know it was bit harder to hear there. I'll have to explore editing options...) This is a pic of the Pinterest pin I was talking about. Unfortunately I couldn't find the original source to give them credit.

I'm going to hang mine in Violet's room and will probably pry the boards of my palette to arrange them in a similar way, but the finish will be different. I already used a bit of that peachy spray paint I showed you to just start layering come paint on that bad boy. Eventually I will sand and stain it, make it nice and distressed (similarly to how I did it here, to create my Bird Palette) and use an LCD projector to trace the letters on... How you ask??
       You'll see!! ;) ;)

Ask Away Friday

I've joined in with some of my favorite ladies for week 4 of #AskAwayFriday this week.

This week I asked the lovely Chan of My Life as a Mum to be my question buddy!

I met Chan after she stopped by my blog and wrote some lovely, thoughtful comments on some of my posts. Her kind heart and genuine interest in what I wrote really shone through her words and speaks volumes about the person I am coming to know. She puts that same honestly and thought in to everything that she writes over at her blog My Life as a Mum- and I can't wait to find out more! You can find my 10 questions for Chan and her answers right here, and read on to hear the questions she asked me and how I answered. Here goes...

1. How did you get the name of your blog ?
I was trying to think of a catchy, crafty title that sounded good and could sum up my style. I've always liked paisleys. I like the retro feel they evoke and how intricate and unique, yet familiar and recognizable they are- Paisley is also the name of one of my 2 cats (that's her over there to the right in my side bar on the bottom. The other one is Hickory, or "Hickey" as we call her.) "Patchwork" came about after a lot of brainstorming of words that would encompass the idea of an eclectic mix of things. That is a big part of my style and what I'm all about- varieties of textures, patterns and colors that somehow work together, just like a patchwork! Add to that the cozy, homey feel of patchwork quilt you have the overall feeling of exactly what I want to surround myself with and share with others: comfort, familiarity and understated, easy beauty.

2 Which of your blog posts are you the most proud of ?
Oh my goodness I am SOOO excited about this one- there are a lot of posts I'm proud of, but just yesterday I found out that my post detailing how I decorated and DIYed a budget nursery (for my newly arrived, second little girl, Ruby) is being featured on BlogHer right now!! This is huge for me for so many reasons. The recognition just feels like a validation that I'm doing something right. I've had this blog for almost 2 years and only this past July decided to dive back in and figure out what I needed to do to make it reflect who I am and also reach out and be heard. I went from under 300 views to over 5000 in 2 months so far, and for me that's really exciting, so a BlogHer feature is pretty huge.

3 If your house was on fire and you could only save three items what would they be ?
Wow, tough one. My house catching on fire is probably one of my top 3 biggest fears. After making sure my family and cats were ok, I would definitely grab my laptop. There is so much saved on here that I just can't replace. Then I would have to grab as many of my old photo albums as I could. I don't have digital copies of them and it would take forever to scan them all. I would be devastated to lose all those momentoes. You can't go back and recapture senior prom, or your first birthday party when you grew up before the digital era! Lastly, I would grab the collage my best friend Christin made me before she passed away. I wrote a little about it here if you're wondering. This is a pic:

4. Which area in your house would you like to change if you could and what would you do with it?
Just one area? I am a huge HGTV addict. It is the only channel that I actually have memorized other than Disney Junior (HGTV is 730 and Disney Jr. is 126. That's where channel surfing ends. DVR navigates the rest.) I spend many an afternoon dreamily watching Yard Crashers, desperately wishing they would come sweep me away.I have seriously considered camping out at the local Ace Hardware and have already imagined the outfit I'd wear, and the fun, handy homeowner vibe I would portray. Yup. OR Kitchen Cuties, I mean Cousins ;) I'd die. My kitchen is in dire need of something to take it to the next level, and I fear it's a long, long time away for us to afford it.Sorry if you don't speak "HGTV." In a nutshell: the backyard or the kitchen. And what would I do with it?? Don't even get me started, these answers are already getting lengthy.... I already made up an inspiration board on Pinterest for my kitchen and my backyard has so much potential to be an even better BBQ/fire pit/outdoor movie night spot than it currently is.
*images courtesy of these pins: house, kitchen

Please?

Oh and don't forget Curb Appeal! My next door neighbors house is immaculate and they are the best neighbors anyone could have, but I just know "Tom" (that's my extremely handy, meticulous, and nice as can be neighbor) would love it if we got our act together a bit more. <sigh> I could go on about this forever, so if I haven't lost you yet, lets move on to the next question.

5. What do you enjoy most about teaching art ?
The kids. They make me laugh and drive me crazy. It's also pretty fun being able to teach them a subject that many of them really enjoy. I also happen to be lucky enough to really love the people I work with :)

6. Do you have any guilty pleasures ?( tv show, magazine, book, song, food, things you buy)
Many. Beer (Blue Moon with a big ol' orange specifically,) fried food, TV shows that teenagers watch (Vampire Diaries, Glee...) Admittedly loving the Backstreet Boys, Chick Flicks...

7. What is your favourite thing to do in your ‘me time’?
Right now, blogging! I enjoy making layouts for my posts and editing photos on Picmonkey, and learning all about it. I'm usually a big reader too, but its been a while. When I next have a big chunk of time I would love to get back up in my studio and be creative, but lately that has been pretty hard to do!

8. What do you enjoy doing most as a family?
We always have a lot of fun going to Great Adventure. Vi loves the rides and so does my hubby. I get a kick out of watching them be kids together.

9 What is your favourite clothing item ?
I'm not sure if this is meant to be specific to like, "a gray, fringey, wool infinity scarf from NYandCo." or 'hoodies,' (2 of my faves) BUT when it comes to "must wear" I absolutely, positively will not leave the house without earrings. And usually of the dangly variety. Right now I am still in my pajamas, (it's 3pm) and I have earrings on.
See? :)

10. What do you like most about being a mum ?
I love watching my girls grow and change. Seeing how their personalities evolve and the little people they become. The feeling of the true and boundless love you feel for a child who stole your heart at their first breath and astounds you every day. Being able to see these little faces every day...

So those are my answers to Chan's fabulous questions! Don't forget to stop by her blog to check out how she answered the questions I asked her, and please feel free to join us for #AskAwayFriday! Just exchange your questions and link up below- Don't forget to stop by and read what some of the other participants have to say and let them know you're reading!
