Tunesday Tuesday: Week 5

We all need a little music in our lives. A good song can answer a question, soothe the soul and provide an escape. It can recall a memory in the most vivid detail and evoke the most intense feelings.

“Music is the great uniter. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common.” -Sarah Dessen

We created Tunesday Tuesday to do just that, bring people together through music.

Every Monday night at 9pm the link up will go live at The Patchwork Paisley, Drinking the Whole Bottle, Momma Candy, and MrsTeeLoveLifeLaughter. We will designate a theme, and hope that you will share a song that embodies said theme for you. Post the video for the song, an audio clip, the lyrics- however you want to do it. Then, write a little something about why this song captures the week's theme and link up your post here with us!

Visit your hosts after 9pm (EST) on Monday nights

Tunesday Tuesday Week 5: Fave song of 2013

Some pretty amazing things happened in 2013. We welcomed our gorgeous second baby girl and sent our oldest off to her first year of preschool. I hit the blog-o-sphere this year as well, officially launching The Patchwork Paisley after much research, a design overhaul and a moment of revelation in which I realized my love of writing and allowed myself to think that I might actually be able to make something out of all of this...

This year also brought about some very important world changes, one that is very important to me being the continuous fight for equal rights in the LGBT community. The fight for equality can never truly be won while there will always be people who can't accept that we are all the same in love no matter who it is we're loving.

In 2013, Macklemore hit my radar with Thrift Shop which I adore, and cemented my love for him after his song Same Love. His words touched me with their very honest and raw emotion and overall theme of acceptance, tolerance and understanding. As a middle school teacher and avid supporter of anti-bullying efforts, I was moved to tears the first time I heard this song as I imagined the pain of living in a world where you felt the need to hide who you are in fear.

We are making progress. We will never live in a perfect world, but these little changes are huge victories and definite symbols of hope- and if there's one way I want to say goodbye to 2013, it's with hope for another year full of positive change.

Happy New Year!
May 2014 be a year full of joy for you and yours.

Sometimes the best way to speak your heart to someone is through a song.

It's such an amazing feeling when lyrics can sum up feelings that may otherwise be impossible to describe.

Pick a song and dedicate it to someone special!

Favorite Song of 2013

When we had Violet's one year pictures taken in 2011, our amazing photographer Lesley Worley made me a slideshow of the images set to this song by Taylor Swift. I had never heard the song before and as a first time mom was immediately brought to tears. I was watching time fly by in warp speed, finally understanding what everyone had been saying to me since the day she way born: enjoy every moment because the time will fly.

I thought the second time around with Ruby would somehow be different. I would know more, be able to slow things down a bit without some of the trepidation of parenting clouding my vision and see, live and hold on to every second. Now almost 5 months have passed since she was born and here I am again, marveling at how much she grows and changes every single day.

There is nothing like being a mom. I live each day with my heart on the outside of my body, worrying, hoping, laughing and experiencing more love than I ever could have imagined was possible. This song says so many thing, not just about the feeling of having little girls, but the experience of being one too. I connect with it on so many levels and I hope you enjoy it.

Ask Away Friday: Week 20

How has it been 20 weeks of Ask Away Friday?? I love getting to know so many awesome bloggers from week to week and this 20th edition is no exception- I was happy to swap with Carissa of The Green Eyed Lady Blog. Read on to check out 10 questions she asked me and make sure to swing on by to visit her page, our awesome hosts and co-host, and the rest of the AAF participants.

 1. I love the name of your blog, what is the history behind it?
Thank you! I was trying to think of a catchy, crafty title that sounded good and could sum up my style. I've always liked paisleys. I like the retro feel they evoke and how intricate and unique, yet familiar and recognizable they are- Paisley is also the name of one of my 2 cats (that's her over there to the right in my side bar on the bottom. The other one is Hickory, or "Hickey" as we call her.) "Patchwork" came about after a lot of brainstorming of words that would encompass the idea of an eclectic mix of things. That is a big part of my style and what I'm all about- varieties of textures, patterns and colors that somehow work together, just like a patchwork! Add to that the cozy, homey feel of patchwork quilt you have the overall feeling of exactly what I want to surround myself with and share with others: comfort, familiarity and understated, easy beauty.

2. What do you have left for the Holidays to get done?
Well, we have honestly only been on one shopping excursion and pretty much banged out all the kids presents (our 3 year old and the nieces and nephews) in one night out to Target and Toys R Us. As of right now I have to mail out our Christmas cards (just arrived from Zazzle today) wrap said presents and buy a handful of presents for the family including all of my hubby's gifts. We're headed to Atlantic City Sunday night and plan to hit up the outlets while we're there (It's supposed to be almost 70 degrees too!! Whaaaat?) Needless to say- I am
a bit behind...
PicMonkey designed, Zazzle printed.
3. Why did you start blogging?
I started out blogging so that I had a way to share my DIYs, home decor and random crafts with friends. I often post things I'm working on over on my personal Facebook and get lots of "how do you do that?" questions. The blog became a place to put all the how to's so I could direct my friends there for the step by step. The more research I did, the more I learned about the amazing community and opportunities available to bloggers and I was lucky enough to meet a core group of pretty amazing bloggers right from the start who have been super supportive.

4. Its your turn to plan date night with your husband, what do you plan?
We're big movie lovers, so I know that he would love to catch a flick, maybe after dinner out and a stroll through Princeton...

5. I read your about me section and I am the SAME way with crayons and stuff, and I also like crafting…if we got together to do crafts what would you plan for us?
These are a few I've made for Ruby and purchased by a friend
OOoooo wellllll it would definitely involve a few bottles if wine (why not?) and some snacks, lots of colorful fabric, foam core and my trusty glue gun. I can't live without my glue gun. Lately I'm really in to letters, so we would probably make a 3D Anthropologie letter knock off.

6.What are three items in your purse that you cannot live without?
My phone/wallet, my sunglasses and cherry Chapstick.

7. If you had a day to yourself…to do only what you wanted what would you do?
A day??? A whole entire day?? Well, I would wake up when my body told me too and not the alarm (it would probably still be no later than 8.) I would spend the morning with coffee and computer in hand catching up on blog stuff. Then, I'd go up in my studio and get lost in a craft project or do some home reno. I've been dying to redo the back-splash in my kitchen. Maybe I'd even treat myself to a sandwich at Panera Bread and head to the movies solo to catch a chick flick. There's something really liberating about going to the movies alone...

8. What are your family traditions for the Holidays?
We do a Christmas Eve open house at my parents where all friends and family are welcome. My Grandma makes her amazing braciole and chicken cutlets, along with lots of other yummies and we just hang out. We like to play some rousing games of Apples to Apples too when the kids allow. In the past we would sleep at my parents up until Violet was 2 and then have a lazy Christmas morning with my mom's overnight french toast, presents and eventually family nap time. Since we will be waking up at our house this year to start building our own traditions my mom will be sending me home with my own tray of overnight french toast...kind of bitter sweet.

9. If "Santa" could bring you ANYTHING in the world (nothing is to big or small…or expensive) what would you ask him for?
I'm getting a new car before New Years and that is really the thing I want most right now, but if Santa could put full home renovation under my Christmas tree this year, that would be fabulous. We're living in an adorable American foursquare built in the 20s with lots of character, but unfortunately things are falling apart. I love being miss fix it, but my skills don't cover leaky radiators, exterior paint jobs and demolition and unfortunately neither do John's.

10. If you could sit and craft with anyone in the world…who would it be and why? And what craft would you pick to do?
Hmmm...I would love to get crafty with some of the amazing HGTV hostesses. I could learn so much and dazzle them with my crazy, colorful sense of style. I'd really love to work on a home rehab project with Nicole Curtis from Rehab Addict. I totally admire her hands on, there's-nothing-I-can't-do, so-what-if-I'm-a-girl? attitude. I have a similar outlook on all things DIY and sometimes have to force myself to stop creating more projects with no time to do  them.

That's it for this week! Here's wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.

Can't stick around for this week's party??
Next week's theme will be...
A Dedication

So, let me preface my clip this week by saying, I am a classic Christmas carol lover. Johnny Mathis' Christmas album is my all-time favorite. Just the sound of his voice takes me back in time to the feeling of Christmas as a little kid- visions of sugar plums, anticipating the surprise of the next morning and all the stress free warm and fuzzies. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Christmas, but just today on my drive home from work I realized that in 10 days it will all be over and I will be left with that sort of sad feeling. All the anticipation will be in the past and the cold months of winter will span out before me with not much to break up the dreary blues except more snow. As a sun worshiper (vitamin D is truly a necessity in my life) I get extremely antsy in the doldrums of January-March. Nowadays Christmas comes lots of money to be spent, wrapping to be done and the impossible task of organizing too many toys with no place to put them. Am I sounding like a scrooge yet?? I totally didn't mean to- stay with me here...

What I realized today is that I need to ignore the stress and open my eyes to all the things I love and have always loved about the season- and the best part: I get to live through my oldest daughter's extremely genuine and beautiful delight with all things Christmas. She literally squeals with excitement every time we pass the same light display. I CANT WAIT to see her face on Christmas morning. She is 3 this year and it is the first year she will be aware of the tradition and story behind Christmas. Christmas is different now and I'm ok with it, but I won't allow myself to wake up on December 26th and realize sadly that I let the holiday pass me by before I actually noticed and felt that it was here. SO- in honor of new Christmas experiences: My all-time fave song has always been Little Drummer Boy (I don't really know why, it just always was.) I considered posting the Johnny Mathis version that I know and love so much, but the other day I came across this amazing a capella version and it just perfectly sums up Christmas through the eyes of a this mama- traditional, new, and beautiful.

Ask Away Friday: Week 19

With so much going on in preparation for Christmas (or I should say in preparing to prepare for Christmas...keep reading and you'll understand...) Take a break, put your feet up, grab a bevvy and get to know some of your favorite bloggers a little better for this 19th (!) installment of Ask Away Friday- Friday the 13th style.

This week I'm getting to know Marika from Ambitious Curls! Her blog is full of inspiration and positivity. It is impossible to leave Ambitious Curls without feeling rejuvenated and motivated. Check out my answers to Marika's questions below, then head over to her place to see how she answered mine! This week in honor of Friday the 13th we exchanged questions related to superstition!

1) Do you try to stay at home on Friday 13th? Or not to shop? Do you believe in it?
I don't really believe that Friday the 13th is more unlucky than any other day and I've never had a particularly bad day on Friday the 13th either. I kind of feel like, if you start the day expecting it to be bad, then it will be- negative energy and all that.

2) My aunt hates black cats. She says she always has a bad day when she sees one. Is there any superstitious thing that you may encounter that makes you feel you'll be unlucky that day? I don't truly think that anything like a black cat or umbrella being opened inside will cause something bad or unlucky to happen, but I still try to avoid those things out of habit. I won't walk under a ladder, and though I've done it, I tend to cringe in the umbrella situation. Same with broken mirrors. One thing I always do religiously though, is knock on wood. I do believe that you can jinx something, but it all come back to energy again. The more you think about how much you don't want something to happen, the more likely that it will.

3) Which would you not watch alone at night: Freddy Krueger, Jason or Chucky?
I am such a wuss when it comes to horror movies, much to the dismay of my husband who loves them.

4) I loved reading "Goosebumps" by R. L Stine as a child. Did you read any horror novels, if you did share you're favorite?
Oh man, I looooove RL Stein and Christopher Pike books! I remember reading Silent Night Deadly Night around this time of year back in middle school. I also loved LJ Smith. I read The Vampire Diaries and the Secret Circle books back in the 90s before they become big again more recently (and I'm a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries series on The CW too. It's addicting.)

5) In October, I did an Urban Legend Series post (http://www.ambitiouscurls.com/search/label/urban%20legends) . Which urban legend scares you the most? I remember hearing stories of cars driving down the street with their headlights off. If you flashed your highbeams at them to warn them, they would come after you. The thought of something like that still kinda freaks me out. I used to be terrified of Bloody Mary too. So much so that I wouldn't look in a mirror in the dark (or go anywhere near one...) When I was about 9 myself and my sister Kelly went in to the bathroom to do Bloody Mary (she was 7 at the time.) My parents thought it would be funny to bang on the bathroom door, then hold it closed so we couldn't get out. Needless to say, we freaked and we were (my sister especially) scarred for life. ;)

6) If you're home alone late at night and the power went out, what would you do?
I would probably light a bunch of candles and then curl up on the coach with my Ipad to read a book.

7) Because it's Friday, what's you've favorite Friday activity?
I am usually beat on Friday night. With the two girls, date nights are rare, but we do like going out to dinner with the family on Friday nights. I also love casual Friday and the bagel breakfast we do every Friday at work.

8) What's your Friday song?
I don't have a specific Friday song, but I will tell you that last night I was on my way to meet some long time friends for dinner and wanted some music I could dance to while driving. I like all kinds of music, but when I was in college and we were getting ready to go out, we would always put on some Ludacris and dance around. Every once in a while I get obsessed with the "Luda" station on Pandora. When I heard this jam last night I was like- "Whaaaaaaaaat!?"

9) What plans do you have for your kids this weekend?
Not much planned for Saturday. It's supposed to snow, so we'll probably relax and have a lazy day, maybe play in the snow. Sunday my parents are taking Violet on The Polar Express train while John and I take Ruby along to go Christmas shopping...

10) And lastly, the killer question, have you finished with your holiday shopping?
Speaking of holiday shopping!! NO. No I haven't. In fact, I haven't started it. We do a lot of online shopping, but we're pretty late this year. Whatever we don't get tomorrow we'll probably order online tomorrow night. I'm a major procrastinator.

So that's that! I hope you enjoyed our Friday the 13th themed questions! Don't forget to stop by  The Real Housewives of Caroline County to check out the rest of the Ask Away Friday participants and make sure you swing by Ambitious Curls to check out what I asked Marika and her fabulous answers. Have a great weekend!
